Understanding your choices 

Choices of reconstruction are dependent on tumor size, type, markers, duration of treatments, radiation recommendations, patient body habitus and underlying medical conditions.
All reconstruction depends on good blood supply and smoking cigarettes is a major risk factor which will also affect options and timing. 
Restorative Nipple areola tattooing is a very low risk procedure that uses the art of realism to restore the areola and nipple area after breast cancer surgery or nipple necrosis for any reason. 

Autologous 
​Oncoplasty

Surgery that removes the tumor in a technique that creates a breast reduction-type of closure.
It is a single surgery in the right candidate.
​It likely requires radiation.

Autologous flaps use your own body tissue to make a breast mound. It is natural and grows with you. It is often a longer surgery.

A quicker operation with good results. May be initiated by placement of tissue expander as a staged surgery.  Individual suitability is required.

Nipple/areola 
Tattooing

Dr Ginty performs 3D nipple-areola complex tattoo on reconstructed breasts with and without nipples.
A specially formulated individual, fast-acting numbing gel is used.
. This is done in Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital outpatient dept. with top of the line equipment, needles and inks.
It is an OHIP-covered procedure with NO COST to the patient

This is a minor "origami" procedure where skin is lifted and folded to create a nipple. It can be performed under local anesthetic in the outpatient dept

Fat Transfer

Fat is liposuctioned off and re-injected in the breast area. This is usually used to augment area of denting or deficit after reconstruction. It must be put under the skin so it is rarely enough for a whole breast.
